Diesel power plant || Components || Operations

We have discussed about power plant, its type and also details description about various type. In this article, we will explore the various aspects of diesel power plants, including their components, operation, and advantages. A diesel engine acts as prime mover that obtains its energy from a liquid fuel (diesel oil) and converts that into mechanical work. An alternator or DC generator mechanically coupled to it converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy. The major difference between a steam turbine and diesel engine is that in diesel engine the chemical energy of combustion of fuel is released inside a cylinder but in steam turbine the energy developed during combustion of fuel is first transformed into steam and this in turn develops mechanical power. The diesel engines are most popular with small generating stations and with consumers who would like to have their own power supply for emergency reasons. They are also used in medium sized installations for peaking loads for a utility. The efficiency of diesel generator ranges from 30% to 40%. Electricity cost is quite costlier and it pollutes the atmosphere massively.
